Elementary School (Kindergarten to Grade 5)

The elementary curriculum at Canadian International School of Foshan (CISFS) is designed to provide a solid academic foundation for children. We follow the Alberta curriculum system, which offers a comprehensive educational environment that encompasses students' academic, social, emotional, and physical development. During this stage, we actively encourage students to engage in active learning and practical participation, fostering their independent thinking, creativity, and problem-solving abilities.

    Division One: Kindergarten to Grade 3

    1. Language Arts (English and Reading): Emphasis is placed on developing students' reading, writing, and oral communication skills. Students will learn letter and phonemic awareness, develop vocabulary and comprehension skills, and gradually acquire basic reading and writing skills.
    2. Mathematics: This subject covers number concepts, computational skills, geometric shapes, measurement, and data analysis. Students will master basic mathematical concepts and skills through hands-on activities, problem-solving, and games.
    3. Science: Students are encouraged to explore and understand the natural and scientific world through observation, experimentation, and inquiry. They will learn about plants, animals, weather, seasons, and basic scientific principles.
    4. Social Studies: This subject helps students understand their community, family, and culture while developing their social skills and civic awareness. Students will learn about geography, history, social systems, and cultural diversity.
    5. Physical Education and Health Education: The curriculum emphasizes physical exercise and the development of healthy habits. Students will participate in various physical activities, learn basic motor skills, cooperation, and healthy lifestyles.
    6. Arts Education: This includes learning in visual arts, music, drama, and dance. Students will develop creativity, expression, and appreciation for the arts.
    7. Chinese Language and Culture: Students will learn basic Chinese vocabulary, pinyin, and character writing. Through exposure to Chinese culture, they will enhance their understanding and respect for Chinese culture.
    8. Information and Communication Technology (ICT): Students will learn to use computers and other digital tools for learning and communication. They will develop skills in information searching, processing, and evaluation.
    9. Cross-curricular Learning: Students are encouraged to make connections across different subjects and develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

    Division Two: Grades 4 to 6

    1. Language Arts (English and Reading): Further development of students' reading, writing, and oral communication skills. Students will study more complex literary works, enhance reading comprehension and analysis skills, and further develop writing and oral presentation skills.
    2. Mathematics: In-depth study of mathematical concepts and skills, including integers, fractions, decimals, algebra, geometry, and data analysis. Students will learn mathematical methods for problem-solving and develop logical thinking and mathematical reasoning skills.
    3. Science: Continued exploration of the natural and scientific world, studying more advanced scientific concepts and principles. Students will conduct more complex experiments and observations, develop scientific thinking, and learn experimental design skills.
    4. Social Studies: Further understanding of history, geography, social systems, and cultural diversity. Students will engage in independent research and investigation, fostering critical thinking and analytical skills.
    5. Physical Education and Health Education: Continued development of students' physical skills and health habits. Students will participate in more complex team sports and games, and learn about healthy lifestyles and personal safety.
    6. Arts Education: Further development of students' artistic skills and creativity. Students will learn more advanced techniques in painting, music, drama, and dance, and have opportunities to participate in performances and exhibitions.
    7. Chinese Language and Culture: Continued learning of the Chinese language and culture. Students will expand their vocabulary, improve their listening, speaking, reading, and writing abilities, and gain a deeper understanding of various aspects of Chinese culture.
    8. Information and Communication Technology (ICT): Students will acquire more advanced computer skills and apply digital tools. They will engage in activities such as information retrieval, data processing, and multimedia production, developing information literacy and technological competence.
    9. Cross-curricular Learning: Encouraging students to make connections across different subjects and engage in interdisciplinary projects and research. Students will apply knowledge and skills from various disciplines to solve real-world problems.
