During Last Week's Field Trip Week,
CIS Kindergarten Children (Ages 2-4) Visited the Community Career Experience Center

This field trip was based on the Reggio Emilia educational philosophy, integrated with the Alberta curriculum from Canada. In an immersive environment, the learning was centered around the children's interests, allowing learning to naturally unfold in real-life situations.

Real-World Scenarios: Making Learning "Visible"

Firefighters, police officers, doctors, pilots, bakers, veterinarians, farmers…
In a highly authentic career experience space, children wore uniforms, used tools, and stepped into specific, real-life social roles.

Through the environment, materials, and interaction, their understanding of the "community" became tangible and meaningful.

From Experience to Responsibility: Growth  Across Different Age Groups

In the same field trip environment, children of different ages showed clear developmental characteristics.

•PK2: Focused on Experience

                and Imitation

Through sensory exploration and role-playing, they gradually recognized professions and social roles around them. They practiced observation, listening, and basic expression in play.

PK2 Homeroom Teacher Ms. Neha shared,"Stepping out of the classroom walls allowed learning to truly happen in the most meaningful way. The children displayed surprising endurance, enthusiasm, and independence throughout the activity."

"Job Experience Field Trip was truly an exceptional and enriching experience for our young learners. Stepping outside the walls of the classroom allowed learning to come alive in the most meaningful way. There was purposeful learning happening throughout the day—through play, exploration, imagination, and real-world connections. The children enthusiastically stepped into different roles: from bravely pretending to be firefighters saving the world, to becoming airplane crew members ready to travel to exciting destinations. The realistic clothing, tools, and thoughtfully designed environments made these experiences even more immersive and engaging, helping the children deepen their understanding of various community roles and responsibilities. Along the way, we practiced important skills such as counting precious rocks while mining, listening attentively to the sounds of fire trucks, and showing empathy and care for little pretend kittens that needed help. Each activity encouraged curiosity, communication, collaboration, and problem-solving. This field trip was beautifully aligned with our IB PYP transdisciplinary learning, allowing students to make meaningful connections across subjects while learning through hands-on experiences. Our young learners showed remarkable stamina, enthusiasm, and independence throughout the day, and it was a joy to see their confidence and excitement grow with each new experience. It was truly a memorable day filled with learning, laughter, and discovery! Thank you for your continued trust in making such enriching experiences possible for our children. "

• PK3: Beginning to Express

                Thoughts Actively

In line with the current learning theme Expressing Ourselves, the children explored "What am I doing?" and "Why am I doing this?" in different careers, and began using language to express their understanding.

PK3 Homeroom Teacher Mr. Ryan observed,"The children enthusiastically explored different careers and gradually understood the important roles that community workers play in our lives."

"Our recent field trip to the Community Services Park in Guanzhou City was a delightful day for our K-3 students, perfectly aligning with our unit, "Expressing Ourselves." The children enthusiastically explored various professions and learned about the essential roles community helpers play in our lives. "

•PK4: Demonstrating Greater

Independence and a Sense of Collaboration

In their "work," the children collaborated to divide tasks, learning about simple responsibilities and rules. After completing tasks, they experienced a sense of accomplishment and gradually understood the relationship between work and reward.

PK4 Homeroom Teacher Ms. Jeanri mentioned,

"It was heartwarming to see the children actively encouraging their peers, helping to complete tasks, and attempting new things independently."

"Our recent job experience field trip was an amazing window into your children's growth and curiosity! The PK4 students jumped into their roles as police officers, firefighters, bakers, veterinarians, farmers, pilots, and air hostesses with excitement and confidence. They worked together, took pride in their “jobs,” and were thrilled to earn and spend their “money”—a wonderful introduction to real-world responsibilities. It was inspiring to see children encourage friends, help with tasks, and try new things independently. These moments—of caring, cooperation, and pride—fit perfectly into our unit of "Where we are in place and time" and show how much your children are growing as responsible, caring community members. There are a lot of activities and Experiences such as students had the chance to step into the shoes of a pilot, experiencing what it's like to fly an airplane. Culinary Adventures, becoming a little chefs, rolled up their sleeves to create simple snacks. Zoo Keeper Exploration, where our students discovered various animals and learned how zoo keepers care for them. Our young learners explored the role of police officers, discussing safety and the importance of community. Firefighter fun was a highlight of the trip! The children learned about fire safety and even tried on firefighter gear. They expressed admiration for these brave professionals and recognized their vital role in keeping our community safe. Throughout the day, students shared their ideas and reflections on the importance of these professions. They learned that community helpers contribute significantly to our lives, and their insights showed just how much they understood. The field trip was a resounding success! Our students left the Community Services Park with joyful smiles and a deeper appreciation for the work of community helpers. This learning journey reinforced the theme of "Expressing Ourselves," allowing them to voice their thoughts and feelings about the vital roles these professionals play. We are incredibly proud of their curiosity and engagement, and we look forward to more adventures in the future!"

This field trip allowed children to learn by observing and asking questions, practice expression and collaboration in their roles, and gradually build confidence and a sense of responsibility in real-world scenarios.

At CIS Kindergarten, we firmly believe that when learning happens in the real world, children's growth becomes more confident, grounded, and empowered.
Looking ahead, we will continue to accompany children on rich and meaningful field trips, helping them explore and understand the world and become better versions of themselves through hands-on experiences.
