Academic Excellence | CIS Students Sweep Gold, Silver, and Bronze in Their First Model United Nations, Winning Overall Best Delegate!

Last week, the YLMUN Youth Leadership Model United Nations (YLMUN) Preliminary Round brought together nearly 100 students from almost 10 schools, including participants from Guangzhou, Foshan, Hong Kong, and even international students from Thailand.
CIS students made their debut on the international stage, competing alongside global peers. They engaged in English-language speeches and debates on global issues, embodying the role of “future citizens of the world.” From stepping nervously onto the podium to confidently expressing their viewpoints, they showed what it truly means to be part of a global community.

In this Model United Nations competition, many CIS students stood out in fierce competition, earning impressive results and gaining confidence in their personal growth.
As a key component of the event, students engaged in deep discussions about "The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and Our Lives." Through their participation in MUN, CIS students gained a deeper understanding of these goals and reflected on how they can contribute to achieving them in their daily lives. They demonstrated a profound awareness of global responsibility.
Knowledge Snapshot
The SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) were introduced by the United Nations in 2015 as 17 global goals aimed at achieving a more equal and sustainable world by 2030.
These goals include eradicating poverty, ensuring quality education, combating climate change, and protecting marine and terrestrial ecosystems, addressing many of the key challenges the world faces.

For many students, this was their first time speaking as a delegate in an official MUN setting in front of judges and an audience. They not only had to present their points clearly within a limited time, but also respond to debates and collaborate with their teams on the spot. Every time they stepped up to the microphone was a small leap forward in their development.
Scoring Criteria Overview
The YLMUN Youth Leadership MUN Preliminary Round invited several guests and judges with international perspectives and extensive MUN experience, including former UN and European institution leaders, experts in MUN and international education, and academic management teams and teachers from Canadian International Education Group.
This professional and diverse judging panel provided high-standard evaluations and guidance for students.

In the opening ceremony, both Chinese and foreign guests delivered video and live speeches, encouraging youth representatives to focus on global issues, speak up, and listen well, fostering a sense of responsibility and global perspective through critical thinking. The bilingual (Chinese and English) hosting made the event more ceremonial and international, allowing students to experience the atmosphere of “expressing on the world stage” in an authentic context.
One of the topics CIS students participated in was "Can Technology Help Reduce Global Poverty?"
The elementary group explored how "smartphones and the internet improve the lives of children in remote areas," discussing changes in information access, online learning, and remote communication.
The secondary group discussed the "positive impact of cutting-edge technologies like artificial intelligence on the job market," analyzing new job creation, increased production efficiency, and industry upgrades.
During preparation, students not only researched and refined their English expressions, but also adopted the perspective of “representatives” to think: What is the connection between technological development and the UN Sustainable Development Goals? Positioned at the crossroads of China and the world, what can the youth generation do?
These discussions made "global issues" come to life, turning them into real exercises in thinking and expression.
For CIS, this was a significant practice point in the "Innovate Today, Leader Tomorrow" journey.
The team was led by Mr. Alex, a Sociology teacher from the secondary division, and Ms. Jessica, a learning partner. He fully utilized CIS’s unique sociology curriculum to guide students in analyzing global issues, fostering critical thinking and cross-cultural understanding.
At the same time, he helped students prepare their research on topics, refine their English speeches, and develop debate strategies, ensuring they could speak confidently in international settings. Model United Nations is not just a competition—it integrates multidisciplinary skills:
Language Expression: Full English speech and debate trains students in language organization and impromptu expression.
Logical Thinking: Building arguments from points to evidence requires clarity, rigor, and persuasion.
Collaboration and Leadership: Team preparation, task division, and cooperation on-site provide real tests of teamwork and leadership.
Global Perspective: The focus on UN Sustainable Development Goals connects local life to global issues.
CIS students delivered a delightful result at their first YLMUN: not only did they earn awards, but they also experienced personal growth. They may still be exploring, but each speech, each moment of listening attentively, is a solid step toward "Innovation Today, Leadership Tomorrow."

This time, we are proud of the award-winning students and applaud every participant who dared to stand on stage. We also invite more parents and students to continue following CIS’s YLMUN program and related activities and join us in witnessing every moment of "moving from campus to the world."
In the spring of 2026, the Youth Leadership MUN Summit Asia Regional Finals will begin, gathering outstanding students from Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Hong Kong, and Thailand for a four-day YLMUN conference.
At that time, authoritative judges will be on-site to guide students, providing valuable learning opportunities and platforms. We look forward to seeing our students continue to shine on the international stage and speak up with confidence.
