3.14. Without a calculator or formula, with only a piece of string, a ruler, and a circular object—could you find this number?
At CIS Foshan Middle School, students in Grades 7 to 11 kicked off Pi Week with this very question, beginning a week-long journey of mathematical exploration.
Over five days, students explored one of the most famous constants in mathematics—π—through measurement, memory challenges, real-world problem solving, historical learning, and creative expression, gaining a deeper understanding from multiple perspectives.

On the first day of Pi Week, students took on the “Pi Exploration Challenge.”
Working in groups of three, students measured the diameter and circumference of circular objects using string and rulers, then calculated the ratio between the two. As each group recorded their results on the board, an interesting pattern emerged: no matter the size of the object, the ratio was always close to the same number—3.14.
By measuring and calculating themselves, students gained an intuitive understanding of π and discovered the hidden mathematical patterns within circles.
On the second day, students faced the “Pi Memory Challenge.”
They had three minutes to memorize the first 100 digits of π. Once the screen went blank, students wrote down as many digits as they could recall. The student who remembered the longest correct sequence earned the title of “Pi Champion” for the day.
This activity not only tested memory skills but also helped students engage with π in a fun and interactive way.
One of the most unique days of Pi Week took place on the school’s football field.
Students were asked a real-world question:
How many soccer balls can fit inside a goal?
To answer, they first calculated the volume of a soccer ball, then the volume of the goal, and made estimates. Through discussion and calculations, students experienced firsthand how mathematics helps us understand real-world problems.
Math teacher Mr. Shahid shared:
"Pi is one of the most important constants in mathematics and appears in many calculations related to circles and the natural world. During Pi Week, students explore Pi through a series of fun and hands-on activities.
The goal is to help students enjoy mathematics and better understand how it connects to the real world."

Later in the week, students explored the history of π through videos and learning activities.
From the ancient Babylonians’ study of circles, to Archimedes approximating π with polygons, to modern computers calculating trillions of digits, students came to appreciate the significant role π has played in the development of mathematics.

On the final day, students participated in the Pi Poster Challenge.
They designed posters using images and words to explain π to others, showcasing its definition, history, and applications. Teachers judged the posters based on accuracy, clarity, and creativity.
As math teacher Mr. Stephen said:
"Math Week is a great chance for students to see that math can be fun and engaging. Through different activities and challenges, they can explore new ways of thinking and problem-solving. It also helps build their confidence and interest in mathematics."
Through a week of exploration, students not only deepened their understanding of π but also experienced the joy of mathematics through hands-on practice, collaboration, and creativity.
Join us at our Middle School and embark on more learning journeys full of exploration and discovery!
